Managing time by working smarter and not harder

The origins of the Cuckoo Clocks made in Black Forest, Germany, which date back to the early 17th century, captivated me during a recent visit there. The common cuckoo bird (Cuculus canorus), which is known to produce characteristic sounds at the crack of dawn when it is most active, and typically rests shortly after sunset, is the reason behind the choice of this bird to represent time on these clocks. They were thus unofficially appointed time keepers. How appropriate!

Are we as good at managing and making the most of our time as these birds are on a daily basis? Because of poor organizing, prioritizing, and planning, we either do too little or too much.We never have enough time to relax in this age of AI and technology; instead, we always feel pressed for time and worn out at the end of the day.Is it possible for us to improve our time management skills without going through burnout or forgoing personal and family time?To assist with this, the following advice would be very beneficial.

Have your own strategy to plan your schedule every day, as one hat will not fit all heads. Some prefer to work more early morning and some during the later part of the day and that is perfectly fine as long as you get your job done well.

Divide up the day into chunks.Set aside time for every chunk.Don't forget to schedule downtime for rest periods and relaxation.Nobody could function without these breathers.

The next step is to prioritize the tasks from most important to the least important and finishing from the most to the least in a descending order. Thus, if a task is not completed on a certain day, it is not of a high priority.

Work shrewdly. Boresome and repetitive activities can be completed with the abundance of free AI applications like Chat GPT, Magic School Ai, Diffit, Bard, etc. While you should still be the one to handle creative and problem-solving tasks which are an integral part of your identity and uniqueness.

Decide on an end time for your workday so that you can devote yourself to leisure pursuits like hobbies. You can read a book, learn to dance, watch TV or movies, or sign up for a self-improvement course. It is not a crime or something to be ashamed of to take care of oneself and make time for oneself. You deserve it after a long day's labor, and it will motivate you to strive even harder to get more.

For some workaholics, socializing with friends and family is a waste of time. This is not at all how it is.We require them at every stage of our life’s journey, but especially at the finish. If we don't give them priority, we will never have them do the same for us when we need them. Spending quality time with family and friends builds lasting relationships which are essential for your life.Just don’t over do it at the cost of your work priorities.

Finally, develop the ability to refuse people and things that don't matter. It is up to you to decide what actions are necessary for your improvement and tranquility. Don't let addiction to work or other people’s expectations from you enslave you to the point that you are unable to appreciate life. Maintain a healthy balance by doing everything in moderation.

There's no need to worry about deadlines or examinations, and there's no cause to stay up late if you plan and organise your time well. When your body and mind are in harmony, you can stay focused and prevent unnecessary distractions or procrastination. Playing a sport, exercising and practising yoga or meditation are quite helpful in fostering this mental state.

To achieve optimal time management, it is essential to engage in reflection before, during, and post work so that we don’t waste time or spend it on useless/less productive pursuits.Hence, a time audit at the end of the day has to be done to course correct any redundant gaps in the use of time.

To conclude, just like the cuckoo bird, rise early and go to bed early, making sure that every moment in between is well-accounted for and free of regrets.

So, here’s wishing you a great time, managing your time.
